San Francisco Rose Society

With a strong presence during the holidays (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Columbus Day), the San Francisco Rose Society evolves around the visual enchantment and intoxicating scent of miniatures, grandiflora, floribunda, and hybrid tea roses. The Rose Garden at Golden Gate Park has been a part of this historic landmark since 1961. Members of the Rose Society is known about town for offering free yearly classes and various programs to spread the interest of roses to San Francisco.

Membership Details

To become a member of the San Francisco Rose Society, simply send a check for $25 to join part of a network that enjoys social get-togethers after monthly meetings; participation in the yearly Mother’s Day Rose Show; access to the Rose Library; visits to selected gardens associated with San Francisco Rosarians; and twelve issues of the San Francisco Rosarian. An annual bus tour visiting out-of-town points of interests is another perk of becoming a part of the San Francisco Rose Society.

Monthly meetings take place on the 2nd Sunday of each month at the San Francisco County Fair Building at the Golden Gate Park (9th Ave and Lincoln Way).

San Francisco Rose Society Events

• General Membership Meetings – Concludes with prizes and refreshments

• Workshops – including presentations, such as “Arranging Miniature Roses”

• Pruning Demonstration (January) – Usually the first Saturday unless it falls on New Year’s Day. This event takes place in the Rose Garden (John F. Kennedy Drive (near the rear of the de Young Museum). Pruning begins at 10am and ends at 1pm.

• Mother’s Day Rose Show (May) – Trophies and awards are distributed during the June meeting.

• Pot-Luck & Silent Auction (August) – Bring dishes that will serve at least six people. Donations for the silent auction should ideally possess a rose-related theme. All proceeds go to the SFRS Horticultural Scholarship at City College of San Francisco.

• Luncheon and Awards (December) – At this time, each guest is asked to being one new (unwrapped) children’s toy that is then donated to the SF Fire Department’s “Toys for Tots” drive.
