A golf club is used in the sport of golf to hit a golf ball. Each club is composed of a shaft with a lance (grip) and a clubhead. Woods are mainly used for long-distance fairway or tee shots; irons, the most versatile class, are used for a variety of shots; putters are used mainly on the green to roll the ball into the cup. A golf club is the tool used in the game of golf and from where the name came from, “kolbe” (German for club). Despite there being no definitive origin to the sport, Scotland is considered the “home of golf.” It has been played for over four centuries with Scotland having the official first club golf course, St. Andrews. In a standard set there are 14 golf clubs, consisting of irons, woods and a putter. Although there is no official limit to each club, golfers tend to have 3 to 4 woods, 7 or 8 irons, a wedge and a putter.
