About Golden-Gate-Park.com

You’re emotionally and physically exhausted.  Life is good, but the days seem to be getting longer.  Your love life is its usual roller coaster.  Your family is driving you up the wall.  Your computer broke down after that guy accidentally sent you a virus.  You missed the bus.  Your car keeps flashing arcane-looking symbols at you, none of which seem to say, “You’re doing a great job.”

You need a break from the hassles of day-to-day existence. Cast off your technological shroud—put your computer to sleep, turn off the coffeemaker, TV, and stereo.  Put the thermostat up a few degrees—you’re not going to be home for a few hours.  Don’t forget to bring your phone, though; you never know when they may call.  Get away from it all, meet some new people, and become part of a tight, active community.

Golden Gate Park, one of the world’s largest man-made havens, awaits you in all its splendor.  It covers over 1,000 acres of San Francisco’s downtown and ranges more than 50 city blocks. The Golden Gate Park is home to the world-renown California Academy of Sciences, the tranquil Japanese Tea Gardens, and the oldest glass and wood Victorian greenhouse in the western hemisphere, where more than 800 live butterflies flitter around you as you stroll through the home of over 10,000 plants from around the globe.

If you’re hungry, visit the Beach Chalet on the west end of the park for a fantastic ocean view (not to mention great food and micro brewed beer).  As the seasons change and winter’s chill creeps in, find yourself a spot close to the huge stone fireplace and enjoy the company of close friends and loved ones while watching the waves crash against the shore, or cast your gaze towards the Murphy Windmill, built in 1905, and at the time the largest windmill of its kind.

If you’re feeling more contemplative, take a quiet walk through the National AIDS Memorial Grove, the first AIDS memorial ever created in the United States.  It was built and is maintained by volunteers and can be found at the corner of Bowling Green Drive and Middle Drive East.

Consider this website a portal into the lush, green world of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.  The site features a forum that allows you and anyone else to discuss current events, news, activities in the park (which include everything from archery to free swing dancing lessons every Sunday), an event calendar so you won’t miss anything that catches your eye, printable maps for new visitors, bike and running paths, and additional Google maps to help you find exactly what you’re looking for in the Golden Gate Park.

Come down, meet new people, get some sun and exercise, take up a new hobby, read a book, visit a museum, see an opera, hike up Strawberry Hill, or pick a path and walk as far as your heart desires.  The Golden Gate Park has it all.  This website will help ensure that you don’t miss a thing.

History & Geography

Measuring more than 1,000 acres, the Golden Gate Park has stood as a symbol of natural beauty, easily earning the title as one of the most visited city parks in all of America. As San Franciscans turned their attention to the happenings of New York City’s Central Park, residents began to yearn for their own scenic community dwelling. Today, although similar in shape, Golden Gate Park possesses an array of unique and one-of a-kind features that sets it apart from other urban settings.

During the 1860s, plans were put into motion to transform the bleak sand and shore dunes that decorated San Francisco into a usable, inviting park for the all to enjoy. In 1870, a field engineer named William Hammond Hill organized a survey and developed a topographic map that would serve as the blueprint for the new park site. One year later, he was deemed commissioner of the project. At first, the park plans were met with natural opposition as engineers attempted to sketch a course of action that would add traverse roadways throughout the park. The positioning of gems, such as the Concourse and the Arboretum, made this difficult to achieve.

In the beginning, ¾ of the park was covered in ocean dunes, but were soon blanketed with various tree plantings. By 1875, the area bloomed with close to 60,000 trees, such as the Blue Gum Eucalyptus and the Monterey Pine. Four years later, 155,000 trees were placed over 1,000 acres of land. In 1903, the Dutch Windmills found their home at the western end of the park with an initial duty to pump water and life throughout the park.

Throughout the years, Golden Gate Park saw the establishment of a wealth of intriguing and entertaining attractions. To name a few, the Japanese Tea Garden welcomed visitors after it originally served as part of the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. The plans for the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum were realized during the 1890s, but planting was stalled until 1937 due to lack of sufficient funds. Local donations helped place the garden on the map. The De Young Museum was first built in 1921 and has since undergone complete renovation and re-opened in 2005.

Changes Throughout the Years

With the evolving times of society and whatever Mother Nature decided to throw at Golden Gate Park, a variety of features or buildings have changed since its start. Over the years, earthquakes and severe storms have weakened some of the structures scattered throughout the park, causing a wave of renovations. In 1995, a major storm with 100 mph winds wreaked havoc on the Conservatory of Flowers, shattering 40% of the glass, until it was once again opened in 2003 after dramatic repair.

In 1989, buildings at the Academy of Sciences were damaged when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck San Francisco. The Bird Hall building was shut down to ensure the safety of visitors and the Steinhart Aquarium suffered considerable seismic damage. The site is scheduled to reopen in 2008.

Golden Gate Park has also seen a wide-range of wildlife, captive critters, and flora blossom on the premises. In the past, moose, caribou, moose, and antelope galloped throughout the meadows. At the Children’s Playground, chickens once scattered about an imitation barn while donkeys and goats gave rides to younger visitors. Throughout the years, zebras, elephants, kangaroos, ostriches, and peacocks once paraded about the grounds. In 1927, Park Superintendent, John McLaren thought it best to allow the park animals space at the San Francisco Zoological Gardens and relocated the residents to their new home. Today, the only odd creature to call the park, “home” is the bison located at Buffalo Paddock.

For example, at Elk Glen Lake (found at the 25th Avenue entrance and Martin Luther King Drive), one of the best places to view ducks is located. American Wigeons, Mallards, and Buffleheads spread their wings in the vicinity.

The seasonal changes and habitat of the park accommodates a wide-range of birds, including the Red-breasted Sapsucker that spends winters in the fruit trees found on the north shore of the lake. Warblers gather in the eucalyptus thriving just north of the lake. The Great Horned Owl is known to take over the night. The Belted Kingfisher is also a frequent visitor of the lakes. On land, Black Phoebes, Song Sparrows, Downy Woodpeckers, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, and Pygmy Nuthatches scuttle about the grounds.

    12) Opera in the Park

September is the month to gather at Golden Gate Park to experience the annual free outdoor concert that the San Francisco Opera hosts. You will not be disappointed when you take advantage of this perfect opportunity to catch wind of the mesmerizing arias and soothing operatic selections that fill the crisp, sweet air of autumn. This impressive event unfolds at Sharon Meadow, where the public has a chance to experience the talent of their very own San Francisco Opera and highly rated San Francisco Opera Orchestra.

    13) San Francisco Rose Society

The Rose Garden found at Golden Gate Park was designed in 1961, which showcases the beauty of hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora and miniatures. The San Francisco Rose Society is often quite active between Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, as well as around the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Columbus Day, as the blooms are quite spectacular at these times. The group meets between Fulton Avenue and John F. Kennedy Drive at Park Presidio Boulevard, where the Rose Garden is situated. Members of the San Francisco Rose Society also donate rosebushes, and provide the public with free annual classes, such as their “Growing Roses from Cuttings” program. The pruning demonstrations are often quite helpful for those looking to go beyond simply admiring the breathtaking attractiveness of roses.

    14) Campaign to Save the Golden Gate Park Windmills

The windmills and the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden have been of interest to the members of the Campaign to Save the Golden Gate Park Windmills for many years, as they concentrate on the restoration of the two pieces of history that decorate the western end of the park. The Dutch (North) Windmill was finished in 1902, while the Murphy (South) Windmill followed in 1905. At the time, you could see the largest windmill of its kind just by paying a visit to Golden Gate Park. However, the years have not been kind to the windmills and the fundraising that this organization heads pays for uplifting the appearance and longevity of these majestic structures.

    15) San Francisco Sierra Club: San Francisco Group

There are about 10,000 members attached to the San Francisco Group of the Sierra Club, which enjoys a host of social events and conservation activities throughout the city. While they spend their time spearheading the efforts to reduce toxin pollution, clean up parks, further recycling processes, conserve resources (such as water), and protect wetlands – members also care about preserving the Golden Gate Park. Some of the interests they’ve backed for the park in the past include extending the carless park days on Sunday to include Saturdays, which allows walkers, runners, skaters, and bikers to take pleasure in their surroundings without the threat of cars compromising their overall safety and enjoyment.

    Permits

While the year-round weather is typically ideal for a visit to Golden Gate Park, it is also the perfect setting to enjoy a barbecued feast during the summer or throw an office baseball tournament in October. Throwing events at Golden Gate Park is quite easy since there are plenty of places, fields, picnic tables, and athletic arenas to take pleasure in. To secure your space at one of the lovely locations scattered about the park, making a reservation or gaining the proper permit is highly recommended.

    a) Reserving Picnic Areas

Small group and family gatherings are charged a $25 fee to enjoy some of the picnic spaces inside of Golden Gate Park that offers a variety of tables, barbeque arenas, and easily accessible restrooms. It is important to keep in mind that not all picnic areas are set up for barbequing or provide tables for visitors. For example, the George Washington Grove located at Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive & 25th Ave. offers tables and barbecue areas, but no restrooms, while the Speedway Meadow on John F. Kennedy Drive & 25th Ave offers tables, barbeque areas, and restrooms.

    b) Reserving Athletic Fields

Athletic fields are available for reservations on single weekends or weekdays, as well as on the weeknights. The fields are often used for team sports practices, games, and tournaments. Reservations are accepted on a first come-first serve basis during the regular business hours from Monday to Saturday. Permits are signed, paid for, and picked up (in-person) at the Pioneer Log Cabin on 2 Stow Lake Drive no later than 5pm on the Monday following your reservation call. You should know there are no phone reservations taken for the holidays. Most fields will be open to the public on a first come-first serve basis. Sometimes, a particular field can be reserved when a request is made in writing at least 30 days in advance. Telephone reservations are only allowed on Tuesdays between 9am and 5pm with a 1 ½ week to 2 weeks advance notice.

    Athletic Field Reservations:

    (415) 831-5510
