What is the San Francisco Opera?
The sounds of the second largest opera company in North America are found right in the middle of San Francisco, upholding a satisfying blend of traditions and innovation since 1923. Each year, the War Memorial opens its doors to about 500,000 patrons, who come to enjoy a season that typically offers 75 performances – spanning ten different operas. In the community, the opera company is well known, as they deliver presentations of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” or timeless tales, such as “Samson and Delilah.” Other performances to look out for include the yearly Opera in the Park.
Opera in the Park History
The annual free concert held in Golden Gate Park began entertaining the masses in 1971 and always followed opening night of the Fall Season. Traditionally, this became a time for artists to strut their stuff in full concert with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. The event is open for all to enjoy and usually brings in about 20,000 eager listeners. Backing the concert is the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as the Friends of Recreation and Parks.
